Chapter 5: AJAX Chat & JSON
We are living in a world
where communication has become very important and there is a real
need to be able to communicate with others. When we talk about
communications, we refer to email, phone, postal letters, and online
chat. They offer a medium through which a small number of people can
exchange thoughtful ideas in form of written words.. Another
important aspect when communicating with each other is the
responsiveness factor. While emails and letters don't offer a live
feedback from the other participants, phone and chat offer a more
dynamic way to communicate. In this chapter we will build an
AJAX-enabled online chat solution.
*UPDATE* Following suggestions
from customers, Packt has updated AJAX and PHP: Building Responsive
Web Applications to now cover JSON, a document format that can be
used as an alternative to XML. Chapter 5, the AJAX Chat Case Study,
now introduces JSON theory and also uses JSON instead of XML in the
code.
